Another half-marathon is on the books!

(from Liz and Nick)

Dear friends,

We've done it once and we're back for more - that's right another half marathon is on the books!

This time, we're running the Blackmores Half Marathon on Sunday 20 September. We loved the experience last time, so we're continuing our commitment to raising funds for Cure Cancer Australia by running with the Can Too Run Team. This group funds brilliant young scientists to pursue potential breakthrough cancer research. They are sponsored by the Macquarie Group Foundation which means that all of their costs are covered so that every cent donated goes directly to cancer research.

Welcome to the UTS Sydney Dragon Blades

The Sydney Dragon Blades were formed in 1992, as the University of Technology, Sydney Dragon Boat Club. In our first year of competition, we attained a 2nd place in the NSW State Finals of the University Mens Division. Since then, SDB has opened its membership intake to the public; professionalism and dedication has taken our club to being one of the most competitive dragon boat clubs in Australia.

The club has maintained a tradition of translating hard work into good results, with a long history of triumphs. Most recently, SDB's Premier Open crew became champions at the Penrith Sprint Regatta of December 2008. The club followed up this triumph by coming second in the Premier Open division, in the 2009 Chinese New Year, while the womens crew became finalists in only their first outing as a full crew in the same regatta.

The friendships which form in the boat enhance our training when we encourage each other to do better. Our club spirit is built not only on paddling, but also on enjoying each others' company and sharing the many and varied interests that members have; scuba diving, rock climbing, hockey, tennis, snow sports and touch footy - which battle for time with other pursuits such as movies and parties, not to mention one of our favourite activities ... eating out (well, we do have to keep up our strength). How do we find the time for training?

Somehow we manage! It's a team effort and for all the grumbling about aches and pains, we turn up for training because we all enjoy it. In the short and long term, we benefit by feeling stronger and fitter, better prepared everything life has to offer. You've got to be in it to win it!

Competing and excelling in elite competition is only one of the club's goals. Sydney Dragon Blades aims to provide a club which allows anybody in the community to access the sport of dragonboating including students, special interest groups, disabled athletes and social paddlers. Our paddlers come from all ages and backgrounds. While we push our personal limits of fitness and endurance it is also our goal to have fun.
